Dates from about 1913. This phone features a classic picture frame front. we have upgraded the phone with a new transmitter and modern network to facilitate connection to the phone line. the internal wiring has been updated so the original bells will ring with incoming calls. alternatively, the hand cranked magneto can be used to ring the bells just like days of old. although this phone does not contain a dial and is therefore useful primarily as an extension, we do have modern tone dialers available at an added cost that will allow this phone to make outgoing calls.
The 317 was first made in 1907 and featured a "lightning arrestor" at the top of the case. Whether that was effective in preventing electrocution is unknown. The solid oak beauty was originially designed to be a party line telephone. Ringing was effected by manually operating the large magneto generator. This involved an unusual amount of cooperation between all the participants on the party line.
